Kanawha State Forest is located South of Charleston WV on WV Route 2. Started in the 1930’s a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) project that cleared abandoned dwellings, coal industry machinery and built roads and a dam.
This almost 10,00 acre facility is home to renowned wildlife and plant life viewing opportunities frequented by those near and far.
Playground’s for family outings to keep the little one occupied while the parents relax a bit are popular during the summer season.
Seasonal offering for camping available from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends. Fully equipped natural campgrounds in the shadow of West Virginia’s most populous Charleston area offer an alternative opportunity to more conventional lodging. Campers are welcome if under the 26 foot length or pop-up campers.
Birding and Photography opportunities abound with a vast and varied list of the wildlife population for your viewing pleasure.
One of Kanawha State Forest’s most popular features with 25 miles of trails and paths available all year round. Hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing opportunities to list a few offer challenging to beginner outings. Handicapped individuals experience “The Spotted Salamander” trail with paved level path with braille interpretive nature stations designed for both visually impaired and physically challenged guests.
